What We Offer
We are a free and independent advisory service, helping farmers in the South West deal with the practical everyday problems which bTB brings. Our advisors have been trained in all aspects of issues relating to bTB, and will be able to tailor their advice and support to suit individual farmer’s business structure and needs. Adrian, Ian or Sophie would be happy to come out for an informal on-farm visit to discuss any TB related problems, or any ideas you may have for your business, and will help you work through them at no cost.
Equally, we are at the end of the phone if you have any questions or queries whatsoever. A few of the most common telephone enquiries we receive or visits we carry out are related to the following:
-
Business Sustainability - identifying opportunities for trading and movement of stock e.g. giving advice on the setting up of Approved Finishing Units/Approved Quarantine Units as an additional source of income, and any other supply chain issues.
-
Environmental and animal health implications – e.g. giving advice to farmers who have not yet had TB so that they can be well prepared should the worst happen, such as the implications of carrying more stock on the farm, fodder etc
-
Support– helping the farmer and his family deal with the stress related problems an outbreak of TB can create
-
Badger Surveys – Do you know what level of badger activity you have on your farm? We can carry out full farm badgers surveys. Setts, runs and latrines will all be marked out on a plan of the farm. Advice will then be given on cropping, grazing and minimising the contact between the badgers and your livestock.
-
Disease risk management – assessing cattle to cattle and badger to cattle risks, and what measures can be adopted to reduce the risk of infection reducing disease incidence
-
CCTV Camera – See what is coming into your farm yard under the cover of darkness! One of the advisors will come and set up a camera in your farmyard for a couple of nights to see what activity there is
-
Liaison – if needed between the service and other official bodies on behalf of, or with farmers
-
Facilitating – Signposting and help finding other organisations that can provide assistance
